Man, this poem was a punch to my stomach when I read it again from the safety of my home in the United States. It startled me how this story still rings true. Frightenedly true. It’s just so hard to sit by and ignore the war in our midst. Here’s why you should care, too.

I generally write about nonfiction and about the conflicts in the world we live in — not poetry. But as many of you know, this poem by Tennyson transcends form and function. It changes everything.

The poem was written over 150 years ago. It’s about England and France fighting Russia over land in the Crimean. The story is painfully true about the world fighting Russia over land in Ukraine today. A war that is far from being over.

Many of you out there in my Medium community are poets and educators.

How has this poem changed you and the people you teach?

The world needs to know.

Here is a picture of the romantic perspective of war.

The Charge.
