Positive and Negative Reinforcement both work. One better than the other….

If you’re like me, you have a love of writing. If you’re like me, you know what the feeling of procrastination feels like all too well. My name is Mark and I am a technology career professional and now Medium writer and I have a lot to share. I live outside Boston and do most of my writing in a community office space. What’s not to like?

Well, my positive writing motivators are being in an environment around creative individuals and coming up with lots of writing ideas — mostly in the shower. You would think that would be enough to put “Pen to computer” and hit the real scary button labeled, “Publish.” But yea, that is not enough.

I have to say that the negative motivators help me to get the job of writing done much better on a regular basis! If you are an old-school journalist you understand the life skill called writing on deadline. As if you are dead if you miss it. I can relate to the fear of death. Right now, I use a timer with a loud ring to be my deadline reminder. What do you use? Inquiring minds just have to know!

One other thing works for my writing. Reading other writers on Medium and commenting on their writing. One budding writer I just found today motivated me a lot with her article Are you afraid of rejecting a job offer?. See Jo Hannah as this article kicked up a lot of old feelings and maybe some new ones. I like the feeling of one family being in this all together. So I would love to hear what works for you. I will add it to my collection of motivators!

Please feel free to follow me as I got a lot of very cool new stories coming from the soon-to-be frigid world of Northeast USA. I love the community of writers and brave souls that make up the Medium Family.
