This study is as important when you wrote it as now in 2022. I'm kind of embarrassed after watching football so many years, that in the last 3 I started to look and understand a bit what is going on. It makes any game more interesting.

I think the big screen tv's, on field cameras, and YouTube has made following the defensive formations more real - and (All 22, Manning Cast, too). Prior to that, the cameras were only on the ball.
