The American job system is a brutal proposition. Here’s a better option.
Unless you are in the lucky few of unionized people, we are now under the auspices of 3 DIRE words: Hire-at-Will which is legal speak for Fire-at-Will.
No reasons really are needed: Employers can just “Cancel on Demand.” It’s a one-way deal that affects the entire fabric of 21st-century society: neighborhoods, families, and getting any good sleep. Ugh.
Since the old days of college and our parents, the holy grail was to win a Good Job. We learned that companies are communities. Places where we belong. Security. Socialization.…but boys and girls it is time to grow up.
This is not fantasy land. You are a just number on a spreadsheet. Names are pure window dressing. Companies will shoot you at the first sign of trouble: A bad quarter or shareowners who believe cutting a few more heads will push incremental profits. I have had so many wicked, evil bosses. How about you?
So if you ever wondered whether it was worth it to break on your own…..just do it! I work on my own in a shared community office and I love it. On my own yet connected.
