The “High School Days” Challenge Time Machine
Do you remember your bittersweet days of being a school kid? My bus was called “The Zoo.” My French Teacher — hot, hot, hot.
I am taking the High School Challenge that Scot Butwell started. Scot is always challenging me so I had to respond!
A short profile:
I went to a small Catholic college-prep school run by the order of Holy Cross. The school was located in east Akron, Ohio about 25 minutes from Canton and 40 minutes from Cleveland. Not a nice part of town — rubber companies were still in business and the rancid smell from the belching, black smokestacks was ever-present.
But we learned and excelled anyway despite the environs.
My brother Mike and sister Andrea would follow me to the school under the “Archbishop Hoban Family Plan” where tuition was $400 per student. Andrea would become a star female athlete there when the school went co-ed my sophomore year.

Most days, I was on a city bus my school contracted called “The Zoo.” And Zoo was an understatement. More smoke and purple haze on that ride felt like Cheech and Chong had to be…
