No, economics is based on the assumption that people make rationale decisions on what is best for them. I did consulting work for the states, and many in the Northeast were paying more in UI benefits than most entry level jobs - especially with Covid closing so many small businesses. So as could be expected, the motivation to take a job and work when you could get paid more for not working made little sense. And this is usually not a problem when UI benefits last 3 - 6 months. The problem was that the Federal Government kept extending the unemployment timeline by adding additional funds to the State UI coffers. And so here we are. Thanks for writing. Am following.
