Matthew, what a balanced and well thought article. I liked how you expressed your personal need for community. Please please take a look at Father James Martin, SJ a fellow Jesuit like the Pope. Father Martin has done active welcoming of LGBQ members and like you points you every step Jesus took to welcome the traditional rejected. He is not proud of the past, but being a big thinking Jesuit, goes out of his way to ignore the beauracacy and get close to everyone.
