It’s Time to Stop Living Small
Part I: It’s really good to reward yourself
I have always lived small. The fear and uncertainty of being afflicted by OCD made it so I always felt like a loser with a new disaster just waiting around the corner. How can I plan to spend money when my so-called life could take it away at any time?
But it is time to make a change boys and girls. About our relationship with rewarding ourselves and maybe just for once let the fears be damned.
Funny, so many things I would reward myself with are set on contingency:
“I can’t reward myself with a vacation until I find someone to go with…”
“I can’t buy this for myself because it would be selfish…”
It’s like we are so worried about the future that we don’t feel worthy of a reward in the present. Yikes. What a way to live.
I read a book a very long time ago that dramatically changed my thinking about money called: Money is My Friend, by Harvard Business School graduate, Phil Laut. I discovered that the main reason why I fear spending money is that I know it doesn’t solve my issues of loneliness and not being part of a couple. But it can play a role in a successful, happy life in some way or form.
The fact is that life doesn’t last forever. Putting off everything to the indefinite future just means that you miss out on a lot of fun. Someday may never come. It is a fact of life and a fact of death. Yes, that new Tesla or exotic vacation will not bring you eternal happiness but if that is your dream then it might be a good time to go for it, caution be damned.
