It's a matter of growth curve/cash cow curve management. As you know, modifying factories is no easy thing. And all hardware-based companies have faced this dilemma and usually lose in the long run.
So I think the mindset today is to protect the cash cow for as long as possible and buy out the startups in the markets you cannot reach. Ford made the bold move to stop building sedans and came up with their Mach EV which looks good. I think the jury is still out on can Ford survive though. And Toyota balking at EV's is just shocking.
