A little background to set the tone — a gritty city, a gritty team
As some of you great Medium writers may know, I grew up in Akron, Ohio the former rubber capital of the world and the home of dirigibles or Flying Blimps like the Goodyear Blimp. Akron, a mid-sized northern Ohio city, was fervent ground for the Cleveland sports teams, a mere 40 minutes north.
I rooted like crazy when I was a kid starting as a post-toddler beginning at 5 years old and amazed my parents with my remarkable memory of sports statistics of almost any kind.
Alas, the baseball team —back then Cleveland Indians, now politically corrected to the Cleveland Guardians. So many of these players may be before your time or unheard of — but some you will find fascinating even if you have to look them up.
